Rani Kapur responds to SC mediation call in Sunjay Kapur estate row

The ongoing legal battle over the estate of late businessman Sunjay Kapur has taken a significant turn after the Supreme Court urged all parties to consider mediation instead of prolonged litigation. The dispute, reportedly involving assets worth around Rs 30,000 crore, has been playing out between his mother Rani Kapur, his widow Priya Sachdev Kapur, and other family members.
During the recent hearing, the apex court issued notices to multiple parties and strongly recommended mediation as a more practical path forward. The bench also highlighted Rani Kapur’s age, noting that extended legal battles may not serve her interests. Observing that such disputes could drag on for years, the court encouraged an amicable settlement rather than a prolonged courtroom fight.
Rani Kapur breaks silence
Reacting to the court’s suggestion, Rani Kapur clarified that her legal fight has never been about personal conflict. Instead, she emphasised that her intention is to ensure fairness and protect what she believes rightfully belongs to her and her family. She expressed openness to mediation, stating that she is willing to engage in a transparent and fair process if it leads to justice.
“This was never about conflict,” she said, underlining that the dispute is rooted in concerns over fairness, legacy, and the handling of family assets. She further added that her priority is to safeguard the family’s legacy and ensure that no one is unfairly deprived due to alleged manipulation or breach of trust.
The case itself stems from Rani Kapur’s challenge to the creation and functioning of a family trust linked to the Sona Group. She has alleged that the trust structure deprived her of control over significant assets and that key decisions were made without her informed consent, particularly following a health setback in 2017.
All about the dispute
The dispute intensified after Sunjay Kapur’s death in 2025, with multiple claims emerging over control of assets and business interests. Parallel proceedings and competing claims from various family members have added to the complexity of the case.
Despite the tensions, the Supreme Court’s push for mediation signals a clear preference for resolving the matter outside the courtroom. While the court has kept the option open to hear the case on merits if needed, it has strongly encouraged all parties to first attempt a peaceful resolution an approach that Rani Kapur appears willing to consider.
