The memory of 26/11 is closely tied to Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus. On Tuesday, that same landmark became the setting for the trailer launch of Prahaar: The Untold Story of Ujjwal Nikam, bringing the story of one of the country’s most closely followed terror trials back to a place connected to the tragedy. Maddock Films unveiled the trailer in the presence of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Ujjwal Nikam, whose career inspired the film. The choice of CSMT was significant as the railway station was among the locations targeted during the November 2008 attacks.
Rajkummar Rao steps into Ujjwal Nikam’s role
Rajkummar Rao plays public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam in the biographical courtroom drama, directed by Avinash Arun and produced by Dinesh Vijan. Wamiqa Gabbi, Jaideep Ahlawat and Sikander Kher also feature in the film. The story focuses significantly on Nikam’s role in the prosecution of Ajmal Kasab, the lone surviving attacker captured after the 26/11 attacks. Historical reports from The Indian Express document Nikam’s role as special public prosecutor during the trial, including his handling of prosecution witnesses and evidence. Nikam himself previously praised Rao’s portrayal, telling India Today, “Rajkummar Rao has delivered a remarkable performance”, while saying the film also explores his life beyond the courtroom.
Prahaar looks beyond the headlines
The makers have said the film is not intended to focus only on the 26/11 case. It also explores Nikam’s professional pressures and personal life while revisiting some of the major legal battles associated with his career. Nikam told India Today that people often remember the verdicts but not the difficult period preceding them. “People remember the verdicts. They rarely remember the nights before them,” he said. The film’s teaser had already established its courtroom focus, while the trailer launch at CSMT adds another layer to its connection with Mumbai’s history.
When will Prahaar release?
Prahaar: The Untold Story of Ujjwal Nikam is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on October 16, 2026. The film was earlier slated for an August release before being postponed. With its central character drawn from a real legal battle and its promotional campaign rooted in one of the key locations associated with 26/11, Prahaar is set to bring a courtroom-focused chapter of recent Indian history to the big screen.
