Actor Imran Khan, who was recently detained by Mumbai Police for participating in the CJP-led protests in Mumbai on October 10, 2026, has now been asked to leave the country. This comes after his detention sparked a debate regarding his citizenship, with many raising questions about his participation despite not being an Indian citizen.
Imran Khan asked to leave the country
Imran Khan, who is the nephew of Aamir Khan, has been issued a notice by Mumbai Police as per reports on October 15, 2026. The notice directs the actor to leave India by October 28. Imran Khan was seen participating in a protest at Mumbai’s August Kranti Maidan demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar on October 2, 2026. During his participation, the Mumbai Police had also detained him.
The Mumbai Police has now taken action against the actor under the relevant provisions of the Immigration Act. The Police said, “Action has been taken against Imran Khan under the relevant provision of the Immigration Act over his participation in the protest despite not being an Indian citizen.”
Notably, Khan is believed to hold US citizenship. Additionally, he possesses an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card rather than full Indian citizenship.
Imran Khan detained
Imran Khan was among the protestors who gathered at Mumbai’s August Kranti Maidan on October 10 to demonstrate against Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, seeking the latter’s resignation. He was accompanied by his partner, actor Lekha Washington, and cousin Zayne Marie Khan.
The three were detained during the demonstration before being released later. The actor had shared a picture of himself sitting inside the police van with the caption, “Apparently I’m going for a drive”.
A video from the protest had also gone viral in which Khan was heard saying ‘Jai Hind’ to the police. Another clip showed him saying, “I honestly don’t know why I have been brought here. They picked all of us from the streets and asked us to sit in the vans.” He added that those detained, including him, were driven around in the police van for approximately two hours before they were eventually released. The police had reportedly detained around 400 people during the CJP protest in Mumbai.
