End of the world? Here’s why sky in Australia turned blood red

The sky turning red was unusual and uncommon — even for Australia. On March 27, the sky suddenly turned a deep, dramatic shade of red.

The striking moment, captured in a viral clip shared by AccuWeather on X, spread like wildfire online.

Many viewers described the scene as surreal, with some comparing it to dystopian or end-of-the-world scenarios.

What caused this rare phenomenon?

Meteorologists explained that it was linked to a large amount of dust suspended in the atmosphere, lifted by strong winds associated with Cyclone Narelle. The dust particles scattered shorter wavelengths of sunlight, making the sky appear red and orange.

Officials in Perth and nearby regions reassured residents that the spectacle, although dramatic, was not considered dangerous.
