India’s first satellite-guided helicopter approach goes live at Bengaluru’s HAL Airport

India’s helicopter operations have got a major boost with HAL Airport here becoming the country’s first airport to operationalise the Required Navigation Performance–Category H (RNP CAT H) helicopter approach, a satellite-guided precision navigation procedure designed exclusively for rotary-wing aircraft.

Developed by the Airports Authority of India (AAI), validated through flight trials conducted by HAL test pilots and approved by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the procedure allows helicopters to follow highly accurate, optimised flight paths while negotiating terrain and urban obstacles.

The new approach is expected to cut the time taken by helicopters to approach HAL Airport from around 12 minutes to just four minutes, significantly improving operational efficiency.

HAL CMD Ravi K said the operationalisation of India’s first RNP CAT H helicopter approach was a significant milestone for the country’s aviation ecosystem.

“This capability enhances the safety, efficiency and accessibility of helicopter operations and establishes a benchmark for similar procedures to be implemented at airports across the country,” he said.

Unlike conventional helicopter approaches, the satellite-based procedure provides a defined and highly precise flight path, allowing helicopters to operate more safely in complex urban environments and during adverse weather conditions.

With nearly 50 helicopter movements a day, HAL Airport is a key hub for rotary-wing operations in Bengaluru. The new procedure is expected to improve airspace utilisation and allow smoother integration of helicopter and fixed-wing aircraft operations.

It will also help reduce the noise footprint over densely populated areas by enabling helicopters to follow more predictable and optimised routes.

The capability could prove particularly useful for air ambulance, search-and-rescue and other critical missions, where faster and safer access can be crucial.
